Weed Free Woodford
In 2016, weather conditions were perfect for a massive infestation of fireweed in the Woodford District. Members of the Woodford Lions engaged with politicians at the local and state levels to find a solution to the problem. The result was the instigation of the Weed Free Woodford project coordinated by the Woodford Lions and working with Council to educate members of the community on two destructive weeds in the area …Fireweed which was prevalent in autumn and winter seasons
And Giant Rats Tail which was problematic in the wet season from October to March. Both weeds have a detrimental impact on property owners with livestock. Grants allowed the Woodford Lions to organise for Professor Brian Siddel to speak to property owners about strategies for eradicating fireweed. Grants were also obtained to educate property owners and provide herbicides to owners of smaller properties. This project continues today. If you wish to help, please contact us.
